White Death Zonker for STEELHEAD | Fly Tying How To

To tie the white zonker you start with a
2x long streamer hook.I use a size 8 or a size 10 hook and you place it properly
into your vise so that it’s safely secured. And the materials you need are a
couple of things, you need your white rabbit strip for this particular pattern,
I like it just a little bit thicker than the thickness of a nickel, and then the
mylar tubing which forms the body and I buy the thinnest that I can possibly buy,
and then I use two bobbins with two colors of thread. I have orange and I
have black and this is Danville 210 denure flat wax thread and it does work
the best for tying this pattern. What you do then is to size up the mylar
according to the straight length of the shaft of the hook, and you cut the mylar
to that length and then you take your orange thread on the bobbin, start it at
the back of the straight shank near the bend and secure it in and then trim the
tag end off. You want to slip the mylar up over the shank and in the mylar is
some material you pull that out and then tie the mylar down at the back of the
bend of the hook and again let the bob and hang. Grab your black thread come to
the front and start it around the front of the hook covering the mylar pulling
it down make a handful of wraps secure it take your white rabbit strip
and lay it on top of the shank of the hook right near the eye secure it down
build up a head on it. I use a long whip finisher about that
length. Whip finish the head off. Trim it Wet your fingers pull the rabbit hair
back just above where you secure the orange thread make two wraps grab the
whip finisher and whip finish the fly, making six turns. Trim it, pull it back,
trim the rabbit fur about a 1/4 of an inch behind it. And that’s the white
zonker, white death pattern it’s a great fishing pattern
