How to Tie Fly Fishing Knots for Beginners

(intense music) – [Narrator] In this
lesson we’re gonna go over the five basic knots for
successful fly fishing. The first knot we’re gonna
look at is the arbor knot. This is the knot that
you’re gonna be using to tie the backing of
your line to the reel. (soft guitar music) Now that we have our
backing on to our reel, we’re gonna attach the
line to this backing using the blood knot. (soft guitar music) Because most lines and leaders
come with perfection loops, I’m gonna show you how
to connect those two ’cause it can be a
little confusing at time. But if you do have a
perfection loop that does break on one end or the other,
you can always use the blood knot to connect
these two sections. (light music) Next we’re gonna connect
the tippet to the leader. We’re gonna be using the
double surgeon’s knot for this. You can also use the
triple surgeon’s knot, but we’re only gonna
show the double ’cause the triple you’re
just adding one more loop. (light music) And last but not
least, we’re gonna connect our fly’s
using one of two knots, the improved clinch knot
or the non-slip loop knot. We’ll be going in specifics
in the intermediate lessons on fly rigs, we’ll be using
one of these two knots, so I recommend you get very
familiar with both of them. So let’s start with the
improved clinch knot. (triumphant music) And last but not least,
the non-slip loop knot. One of my favorite knots. This right here adds a
little bit more movement to the fly, it is
great for nymphing. (triumphant music)
