How to Make a Fly Fishing Nymph : How to Thread a Fishing Hook

ALVIN DEDEAUX: After we’ve got the hook in
the vice, the next thing to do is attach our thread. And I’m going to kinda wrap it around
the hook, like so, and just wrap backwards until I capture that thread and then make
sure it’s in there. Okay, that’s good. I got it. Take my scissors and cut it off the closest
I can without cutting the thread. If we cut it, it’s pretty obvious because the bobbin
will fall down. And since I’m going to start tying my materials from the back of the hook,
I’m going to go ahead and wrap my thread back to the back of the hook. In this fly, you
don’t want to build up too much extra material. So I’ll just go ahead and wrap it back and
I’m going to start tying it right about where the point of the hook is. So I want to make
sure that I don’t cut that thread. This is a fairly light thread, so you really want
to be careful, don’t cut it on the eye that hooks one. And get it back here, I just sort
of turn it at a little bit of an angle, back at the back of the hook. Our thread is nice
and safe, and I’m ready to start putting some materials on.
