Fishing For Jumbo Perch / Summer Techniques

(outdoor rock) Alright team! Charge! (take me out on the

Holy Moly! (music) (music ends) (music ends) (music) (music) (music) (music) (music) (music) (music) (music) Hey good morning and welcome to
Larry Smith Outdoors. I’ll tell ya what, it is a very
cold morning in July. And I’ll tell ya, we are up
here at Oconto and the perch
fishing has been pretty good. I don’t
know how it’s gonna be today, we just had another cold front
come through. A lot of wind
yesterday, and perch are very tempermental.
The reason we’re up here is,
I’ve seen several pictures of perch over
15 inches. And I’ll tell ya, in my life I’ve only gotten
2 perch over 15 inches and they both came off Goegebic in
the winter. I’ve never caught a
perch over 15 inches. We’re fishing with
our good friend Brian Clairmont
and of course Phil the Blind Guy. Phil, I
like your hair this morning.
Well thank you very much! (laughing) You know when it comes to Phil
why he’s in our boat all the time, his wife
realistically likes a little time alone, so she
sends him our way. And he’s a pretty good
fisherman! So stay tuned let’s
see what happens, today up here. We got our good
friend Brian Clairmont with us
again too. Let’s go out and do a little
perch fishing on the bay and
see if we can catch a 15 incher. Stay tuned! (music) Hey I’ll tell ya something its
pretty rare for me to see loons out on the bay of Green Bay. Unless it’s just that cold that
they’re starting to migrate
back already! (music) Hey I’ll tell ya what! When it
comes to perch fishing you
gotta make sure that you are trying everything
possible. We’re gonna be using tube jigs, we’re gonna be using
worms, we’re gonna be using
minnows, leeches, we’re gonna be
casting, we’re gonna be deadsticking, that’s the key to
perch fishing. I’ll tell ya,
especially when you get these cold fronts
like this, they’re very
tempermental. So try to figure out what they
want. As the day goes on, the
only positive thing we got going today is the
winds are gonna lay down, the
sun is gonna come out, right now
it’s 51-52 degrees and it’s
supposed to hit a high of almost 80. You look
at that temperature swing, so hopefully that will get these
fish moving again and get them
biting. So stay tuned, let’s see what happens today up here on
the bay of Green Bay. (music) Here’s our first perch of the
morning, I think it’s a small
one though. Oh, that’s a keeper! This is a good eater! What did
you get that one on? This is my
little homemade rig. I got a couple of gold blades
on there. That one’s got it
swallowed too so it’s
definitely a keeper. This is my size to eat right
here. You can’t beat these for
frying. 8 incher. Brian, we’re looking
for a 15! Gotta start somewhere,
right? I would agree with you. Can’t
let him go anyways with that
deep hook. We’ll get him on some ice right
away. I gave all my single rod holders to our good friends over at
that Gillotine. They’re making
some brackets we’re gonna be coming back out
on Winnebago and hopefully
doing a perch show out there. With those gillotines. I don’t
have any rod holders! I got my rod trees, but no
singles. Hopefully that rod doesn’t go
out of the boat today. (music ends) (music) Creating a fishing boat that

on here? I don’t know what I
got here! It jumped, I think it’s a bass.
Well you know it’s not a perch,
cause perch don’t jump. If it’s a perch, we’re styling!
You were just casting behind
the boat, too? Yep. We might need a net on this one
Larry! No nets! No net? We don’t have a net sponsor. No
net. Ok. I’ll see what I can do. Ohh! We need a net on this!
Whoa! It’s a big bass! You gotta get
him in. You can do it! Stay out of the motor… Can’t
be any bigger than the bass that we caught a couple weeks
ago. I don’t know, he’s coming
up again! It’s a big one! Whoa! Big like 10 pounds? It’s
a good fiver. A good five? That’s a nice
bass! Nice bass! (music) We’re not fishing bass! Gonna get him? Almost. I got him! Look at that! That’s a nice
bass! Hold him up. I wish it was a perch this big!
Right! I’ll take a perch half
that size! It’s a nice smallmouth. I’ll
tell ya what Brian that was
probably some of the best smallmouth
fishing a couple a weeks ago
that I’ve seen ever. That was amazing! You are
kind of a bass fishing kind of guy aren’t you? Inch
for inch, pound for pound,
they’re a lot of fun! On this light perch tackle too!
Pretty cool! We’ll let this
girl go. We want a perch this big!
Hopefully that thing ain’t
scaring my perch away! Maybe that’s why the perch are
biting slow so far? And it got
down to 51 degrees this morning! A
little chilly, but it is July… (music) Yo! What do you got going? I’m
hoping for a bubba! Keep
reeling! Keep reeling! See what it is… Pike. Nice pike. Real nice pike! Hey, guess what buddy? I found
a net somebody lost! That’s a nice pike! Whoa! (music) Ohh! Nice pike! I’ll get him on this side.
Phil! I thought we were fishing for perch! He ain’t done yet!
(laughing) There’s been a lot of pike this
year up on the bay here. C’mon
baby! Nice pike! That is a nice pike right
there! You’re supposed to tell
me it’s a big perch! (laughing) OH it is a perch! That’s kind
of a neat thing because all year the pike fishing has
been pretty good out here. Obviously today we’re trying to
catch perch. Well that’s why I
did that for you! It’s scaring the perch away! That’s a nice pike. Real thick
on the bottom. Hi baby! As far as eating goes, that’s really good eating there. That
is almost at size. Wanna let him go? Sure. Go
ahead. It’s gonna go back and scare
the perch! That’s right why are we letting
him go! Come back! In the
livewell! Oh I just missed one! Oh! A
walleye! It’s a walleye! Fling him in,
fling him in! A walleye! Alright. I wish it was a perch
instead cause that would be the 15
incher we’re looking for I’ll
tell ya that! I thought it was a perch. Darn
it! Look at what Larry caught! (laughing) I get a goby! Larry’s fish, my fish! I like
that for once! That’s the way
it goes sometimes! Let’s see that one, is he 15? I
don’t think so. 14 maybe. He’s close. We’ll let him get
bigger. I thought we were perch fishing
but they don’t want to cooperate so
I guess we’ll catch whatever we
can! Pike? Walleye? I think it’s a
bass. C’mon. Is this thing
strong! This light stuff too. Sheephead
probably. Yeah! No. Yeah,
sheephead! You got your shirt on! What do you got there? Don’t
get in the motor! Holy man this thing is just
screaming! Sheephead. That’s
what I’m thinking. It’s gonna get in my rods over
there! (laughing) Catfish? Oh big bass! Nice bass! Since we ain’t got
no net sponsor I guess I’m on my own
again! Yeah, we lost our net… Look at that! That’s a little smaller than
the last one you caught at the
other spot. I guess I’m stuck on the
smallmouth. Tell everybody what
we’re doing here. We’ve moved probably 10 times
this morning Brian. Yeah we’ve
been trying to get some perch. Yesterday we
got a few but today they’re
shut right off. We’ve been searching but we’ll
take whatever we can get, hey? I think it has a lot to do with
that water temperature. Once it
warms back up hopefully it will get this perch going.
Wind’s been switching
directions too, we need
something steady. Now it’s outta the south so you
know it’s gonna warm up. Let’s
get that girl back in there. We’ll take whatever we can,
right? Boy these things are strong! (music) (music) (laughing) Oh I gave you the
wrong thing! I hate to say this but the
product tastes terrible! I can’t even bite it! Here try
this instead… (music) I don’t know what I got here! It ain’t no perch I’ll tell ya
that! That’s a perch! If that’s a perch we’re doing
good! Look at that rod! C’mon it could be an 18 inch
perch! Yeah right! Probably a sheephead. Bass!
Another bass! I’ll tell ya something Brian, I
never catch this many bass when
I’m out here by myself, but now that you’re in
the boat… I must be a bass
magnet! Gotta be! Man! Them bass! Hey
Phil! Yo! I thought you were fishing for
these things! You’re supposed
to keep them away from us! Wait till you see the perch I
get on this big jig! Right! Power hey? They have a lot of
power! We caught a bazillion of them
the other day. I’ll get this
one. You go back to fishing. Alrighty! That’s not what we’re fishing
for! Basically what I’m doing
now is I got my deadstick rig right next to me
here which I got outta the way
thanks to Brian. I’m just casting that tube with
a piece of crawler on it. Phil’s actually up there with
some get bit plastics casting for
them. I’m surprised he caught
that northern and nothing else!
They’re all about the same size
size. How big are these? 18-19
inches. I’m gonna measure this
one real quick. To find out. Make sure I wet the board. They
sure are fun. 19 on the nose. 19. 19 and 1/8 ok! Ok I’ll give you
that 1/8! Beautiful fish! I’ll tell ya that! It’s
still not that 15 inch perch that I’m looking for! Hey, just
keep trying! Keep moving! A lot
of bass today! Holy Cats! That could be
why the perch aren’t biting either. I don’t
know… See ya guy! Wow! (music ends) Badger Sportsman magazine! Wisconsin’s premiere outdoor

Nobody sells for less than Lynch! Tell ya what! I am sick of that
sun on me boys! I don’t need any skin
cancer. It’s a good way to cool down so
I’m just gonna grab my bimini here. (music) Ohh! It’s already 10 degrees cooler! You guys stay out
there. I got a good spot here
now! Now I just have to convince the
perch to start biting and I’ll
be in like Flynn! Honestly, you gotta come
underneath here! Definitely 10 degrees cooler! I
got my own bimini top!
(laughing) That’s ok. (music) Whoo ho! Now we’re getting
better! Nice perch! There you
go! I’ll tell what, that ones got
it swallowed. That’s a good
perch right there. That’s a 10 incher. How long?
10 inches. Ok, I’m measuring! It’s not 15, but I’m gonna
measure it and that ones
bleeding like a sieve. If you can catch me perch 10
inches like that I’ll keep them to eat for sure.
I don’t like them any bigger
than that, so if we do get a 15 incher we’ll let it
go. I’ll tell ya what, finally it’s warming up from 51
degrees, 3 different layers I’ve shedded
off already, got the bimini top up now and
the fish are starting to bite.
Why didn’t we do this a long
time ago? Legit… 10.75 inches. Almost 11. Hooray! Nice job. That one I can be
proud of. The other one he caught he
threw in the livewell before I had a chance to
measure it… (music) Got one? Yep. This is a good
one! This is a good one. Decent
perch? I just had a good bite. Let’s
see. Whoo ho ho! There we go! That’s
getting closer! I’m gonna measure it but that
ain’t no 15 incher. It’s gotta
be 11 anyway… (music) Just under 12. That’s a nice
perch right there no doubt. Can
I see? Yep. That’s a nice perch. 12 incher. You know what it is
Larry? What? I just covered up my face
so they don’t know I’m here
fishing for them! That’s all I had to do. Only after about 6 hours we
finally got a 12 incher. Now we
need to get a little bit bigger. Like
another 3 inches my friend! Keep trying! We’ll keep that
one. (music) Oh look at this! Double! Whoa! Alright! Whatever… On a double rig? On a double
rig. That ones gotta be eleven. And a 9. See eat a sandwich and
look what happens! We eat fish eat! Right! Where’s
your board? Where’s your board? He’s just
salty he’s not catching
anything… I’m kicking his but for once! I’ll tell ya what, this one’s a
little bit better. Now I would consider
that….and eater…. But I’ll tell ya what, it’s
still not 15 inches. Hold it way out at me. There
you go. It might be 15, it’s
starting to groowww… Right. (music) (music ends) (music) (gun cocks) (sizzle) Shotgun Steve Schafer in the
kitchen with the better half,
Mrs Shotgun. We have some leftover cajun
Craigers fish perch that we got from
Mike Smith. Dick Smith’s Bait and tackle.
We are gonna make fajitas. I’m going to work tomorrow, the
boys at work want fajitas. The
wife and I are gonna wrap some
stuff up. What do you want on the bottom?
Ranch and a little sirracha
right off the bat? Sure. Lets put that in. Just put a
little layer on it. Don’t worry about me, just
keep going. (laughing) Tomatoes outta the garden,
onions outta the garden! This
is a great time of year! So what are you doing? Just
slicing them up real thin? Slicing them up. Yep. You gonna
just chuck it in there like
that? I am. Take the lettuce that I already
cut. You did or I did before you
walked into the scene?
(laughing) I can’t remember how that went.
I did of course. I’m glad
you’re involved in the
situation. We need cheese! I’m getting it
right now! We have sweet onions, a couple fresh tomatoes outta the garden, awesome time
of year! You used to make these in that taco wagon you worked in when
you were younger? (laughing) Alright. Always fold in the end. Wrap it tight. Fold it over. And now because you’re going to
work, we’re gonna wrap it up
for you. Need help or you got it? I got
this. Fold in the ends. Fold in the ends. Alright. Yeah. Pro. Hear that guys? Pro! There it is! That’s one! Let’s
go! Let’s get the assembly line
going! (music) (music) (music) (music) (laughing) Mmm. That’s good. What did you
put in this? Italian. Is this perch? You have no clue
what’s in here do you? It’s the
perch! With Craigers wrap. I’m going for one more. You got
another one in you? (laughing) Very good. (clears throat) Too much love in this sandwich!
From the kitchen of the Shotgun

brought to you by our good
friends up at Tigerton up there Mike’s Country Meats, the
finest jerky on the planet. I’m gonna tell ya something, I
was up front casting, I was
feeling a little hungry, this could be
the ultimate tip of the week of the whole year!
I was thinking to myself, I’m up front there and I’m a little
hungry for pie. But I forgot my spoon! Look at that pie! Beautiful!
Better than anything Shotgun
Schafer ever cooked up! I’m telling you what, if you’re
out here, and you forget a spoon or a
fork, take your favorite
crankbait (music) Watch them hooks… (music) (inaudible) Look at this! How does anybody, like I mean, can’t you eat a piece of pie
with your hand? Like a normal person? No! Why
would I have to? (music) Kids! If you’re gonna use a crankbait
for eating food like I am,
please take the hooks off. Man that’s good pie! We wouldn’t know… Got one! Whatever this is, its
nice! Sheephead finally? This might
be our 15 inch perch here
fellas! Whatever. Walleye. Oh it’s a nice one
though! No net so get him in. That’s a decent walleye, yeah! We still haven’t seen that 15
inch perch today my friend! We havent seen a 15 inch
sheephead either! No sheephead
for tomorrow! I wish that was a perch instead
but we’ll take it cause it’s been a rough day today.
Nice deal. Let’s let her go
though. We got enough perch anyway to
eat. You got enough perch fry man!
Nice walleye. (music) (music) I’ll tell ya what, we were
trying to get that 15 inch
perch today did not happen. I think the
biggest one we got was close to
13. You know that’s one thing about
filming a TV show every week. Things don’t always happen the
way you want them to happen.
But we caught a lot of fish, had a lot of fun, and that’s
